Victoria University of Wellington was established in 1897 by Act of Parliament, and was a constituent college of the University of New Zealand.

Establishment: Victoria University of Wellington was established in 1899 and is one of the oldest universities in New Zealand.

Student strength: There were over 22,00 students enrolled to study at Victoria in 2012 and 2,919 of these were international students from over 75 countries.

Ranking: Victoria is New Zealand’s top ranked university for overall research quality according to the 2012 PBRF Quality Evaluation. (The PBRF or Performance-Based Research Fund is the Government of New Zealand’s formal assessment of the research performance of tertiary institutions.) It was ranked first or second in 24 out of 36 the subject areas that were offered and its Faculty of Law was ranked as New Zealand’s number 1 law school for research quality. It is also ranked at 23 for Law and Legal Studies in the QS World rankings (2012) where it had an overall rank of 237. Also, it was rated as 12 in Oceania in the Times Higher Education ratings.
