MBBS is basically a Bachelors Degree program in Medicine and Surgery and hence, MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.The course is pursued by candidates who have studied Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English in the higher secondary level.Before one could pursue the course, he/she needs to qualify an Entrance Examination which is conducted on national level, state level as well as by institutes offering the course.

The degrees are the British equivalent of the American M.D. The basic or degree level qualification for a medical profession is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine And Bachelor of Surgery) which is of 5 1/2 years duration (including 1 year internship).
