Based on the principles of excellence, ‘caring wisdom’ and equal opportunity for all, the Central University of Kerala (CUK) is one of the 15 new Central Universities established under “The Central Universities Act, 2009 (Act No. 25 of 2009)”. CUK aims to extend the scope of learning through a holistic methodology that accommodates diverse linguistic, scientific and cultural traditions. The university is headquartered at Kasaragod, the northernmost district of Kerala and has state-wide jurisdiction. It opened its doors in June 2009 with only 17 students, operating from the transit campus in Vidyanagar along with the administrative offices and the University Library. Soon after, the university started the Riverside Transit Campus at Padannakad, 35km further south, which houses the science schools. The permanent campus of the University is being set up at Tejaswini Hills, Periye on a panoramic stretch of 310 acres of land beside the National Highway. In November 2013, the construction of the first set of buildings was completed at Periye. At present, five academic departments are functioning in the permanent campus.
In the last five years since its establishment, CUK has grown by leaps and bounds, be it in the number of students, departments, and faculty or in the quality of resources available. Given the tradition of teaching excellence and research prowess that the university has developed and enhanced in such a short span of time, it stands well poised to continue on its path of enviable growth and success well into the future. CU Kerala offers updated interdisciplinary syllabi in six postgraduate programmes and two integrated M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes in the Choice-Based Credit Semester System. It has state-of-the-art library and laboratory facilities. Internet and digital resources are freely available to students. Separate hostel facilities are available for women and men. Three types of scholarships are available to all deserving students: merit, merit-cum-means, and boarding.
As the first batch of postgraduate students complete their studentships, CU Kerala has enough reasons to feel assured that its vision of education is realistic. The interdisciplinary syllabi have been a success in all programmes; they have contributed to student development and success. Our students’ projects and dissertations have tried to link the ‘local’ with the ‘global,’ thus partaking in the University’s life-based model of education. CU Kerala is now preparing to propagate its unique cultural model of education through faculty and student exchange programmes, publications, conference presentations, etc. For instance, the University has had, in the last two years, the pleasure of welcoming scholars, artists, and academicians from various parts of India and abroad to join us in our national and international seminars, workshops, and conferences. In 2011-12, our School of Languages and Comparative Literature and School of Biological Sciences will prepare agreements to receive faculty from prestigious Universities and institutions abroad such as Texas Tech University (USA); University of California, Riverside (USA); Cleveland Clinic (USA); and University of Queensland (Australia).
