The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) began operations on 1 July 2012 and builds on the strength of its two predecessor organisations Royal College of Nursing, Australia and The College of Nursing; both of whom have represented the nursing profession since 1949.

ACN is a key national professional nursing organization with a focus on nursing leadership and is open to nurses in all settings and at every stage of their career. We are also an authorized higher education provider and registered training organization and the Australian member of the International Council of Nurses.

ACN is the professional nursing organization for advancing nurse leadership to improve the health of the community.

In 1997, the then Royal College of Nursing, Australia became the Australian member of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), creating an important link between Australian nurses and the global nursing community. In 2012 this membership transferred to ACN. As Australia’s member of ICN, ACN represents Australia’s nurses in the development and reform of international nursing policy, and seeks to enhance and promote the nursing profession across the globe. In doing this we also work in collaboration with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation.
