Assam Agricultural University is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern Region of India. The main goal of this institution is to produce globally competitive human resources in farm sector and to carry out research in both conventional and frontier areas for production optimization as well as to disseminate the generated technologies as public good for benefiting the food growers/ producers and traders involved in the sector while emphasizing on sustainability, equity and overall food security at household level.

In order to achieve the above, the university has following support base to lead the overall agriculture and farming sector of the state towards more productivity with appropriate scientific approach. At present it has five Colleges, six Regional Agricultural Research Stations (RARS), six Commodity Research Centres and nineteen Krishi Vigyan Kendras  (KVK) throughout the state with its head quarter at Jorhat.

Genesis of AAU

During early 20th century, two research stations, one at Karimganj (1913) and the other at Titabar (1923) were set up basically to carry out research on rice and to produce trained field workers.  Immediately after independence, a need for an agriculture and a veterinary  college was felt  leading to the establishment of the Assam Agricultural College at Jorhat and the Assam Veterinary College at Nagaon in 1948. Later on, in 1969, the Assam Agricultural University was established  embracing both these two  Colleges.    Subsequently, the College of Home Science at Jorhat (1973), the College of Fisheries Science at Raha(1988), the Biswanath College of Agriculture at Biswanath Chariali (1988) and the Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science at North Lakhimpur (1988) were established under the AAU. Presently another college of agriculture at Dhubri is under making.

Mandate of the University

Imparting resource conserving, quality and market driven education in agriculture and allied fields to facilitate agricultural growth for food security.
Undertake basic, strategic and applied research in the sector for agriculture centric business and employment avenues in the production to consumption chain.
Technology show cashing and transfer to the user groups for science led agricultural growth.

Vision

Provisioning of quality human resource to facilitate technology led agricultural growth ensuring both production and environmental sustainability, targeting a minimum of 4%+ agricultural growth while addressing the issues of household nutritional security, farmers’ distress, commerce in agriculture as well as regional, national and global food crisis taking the advantage of innovative technology, market reforms and liberalization.

Mission

To fill up talent gap in agriculture and allied sectors to pre-position the state to combat the emerging challenges in agriculture and ensure productivity increase in agri-horti-animal-fish crops on the face of shrinking/ fragmented land holdings, ailing soil health, diminishing water resources and increased human populationation.
